Cardell Hayes indicted on murder charge, attempted murder charge

A grand jury has indicted Cardell Hayes, who allegedly shot and killed former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith on the charge of second-degree murder.
Hayes has also been indicted on the charge of attempted murder against Smith's wife, Racquel.
The indictments interrupted the preliminary hearing that is ongoing in a separate courtroom. The state and Hayes' attorneys are arguing over whether testimony will continue in the preliminary hearing.
Hayes, who owns a tow truck company and last year played in a semiprofessional league, has been held in jail since the shooting.
Police said Hayes's Hummer hit Smith's Mercedes SUV from behind on April 9 and they got into an argument in which Smith was shot and killed. The Orleans Parish coroner said Smith was shot eight times with seven of those bullet wounds in his back. Racquel Smith was shot twice in her legs.
A lawyer for Hayes has said repeatedly that his client was not the aggressor and that the truth will come out during the investigation.
A lawyer for Smith's family has described Hayes as "enraged" during the shooting and portrayed his clients as the victims.
Smith was a leader on the Saints team that won the Super Bowl after the 2009 season. The New York native and Ohio State star stayed in the New Orleans area after his 2012 retirement.

Police in Baltimore evacuated a local TV news station today after it received a bomb threat, according to authorities.
A law enforcement source said the suspect exited the building and did not obey commands as he made an exit, and the suspect was then shot by law enforcement.
The initial emergency call came in at 1:20 p.m. from a Fox affiliate and authorities responded to the threat made by an unidentified suspect who claimed to have a bomb, authorities said.
The station, WBFF, is located on W. 41st Street and its building was evacuated soon after the bomb threat was received.
The suspect's condition is unknown at this time. Fire crews and an arson team appeared on the scene.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has also been called to the scene. According to law enforcement sources, a man dressed in a costume with an unknown device on him made the original threat.
A car was also set on fire in front of the news station at the time the man entered the station.
